Which one did he buy? The SDR-14 or the SDR-IQ? The IQ looks neat for the price and there's a lot of excitement out there about it.

Hi,

I guess the big question I have is how these SDR's deal with all of the RFI crud generated by the typical computer.

My guess is that one would want to stay away from PC's with cheapie power supplies.

I saw one SDR ham radio transceiver in action and actually the RFI crud wasn't as bad as I expected on receive...will be interested in folks experiences.

Cheers!

Hi Robert,

Computer generated RFI is not a problem with the SDRs from the last 2-3 years. My SDR-1000 was never affected by it, nor is my current Perseus SDR. With its USB connections and shielded enclosure/chassis, nothing is getting into the radio other than what the antenna picks up.

I think the key thing is to keep your antenna feedpoints a good distance from any computer or RFI-producing electronics, use high quality coax, and isolation transformers on the lead-ins. Grounding the coax shield in one or more places is good, too.

You might want to check out my Perseus blog for more SDR info:

I have an RF Space SDR-IQ running on an old Dell Dimension 8200, or for DXpedition use, a one year old Acer laptop. It works great!!!

My only caution with the SDR-IQ would be for folks in a high RF environment. Not a problem for me as there are no longer any MW stations here in PEI! But, if a MW transmitter site is not that far away, the Perseus might be the way to go.
